MLK and bias by omission

This morning, I was reminded of this excerpt from the Rev. Dr. King's Birmingham jail letters:

“Though I was initially disappointed at being categorized as an extremist, as I continued to think about the matter I gradually gained a measure of satisfaction from the label. Was not Jesus an extremist for love: ‘Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.’… Was not Paul an extremist for the Christian gospel: ‘I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.’… And Abraham Lincoln: ‘This nation cannot survive half slave and half free.’ And Thomas Jefferson: ‘We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal.’… So the question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be… In that dramatic scene on Calvary’s hill three men were crucified. We must never forget that all three were crucified for the same crime–the crime of extremism. Two were extremists for immorality, and thus fell below their environment. The other, Jesus Christ, was an extremist for love, truth and goodness, and thereby rose above his environment.”

Yes, Dr. King was human, and today we know of some of the details of his personal failings.  Set this aside for a moment, because we are human beings and are, by our nature, sinful and mistake-prone.  Accept this.

But most importantly, accept the clear fact that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. rooted his work in the words and deeds of Jesus the Christ.

And this is an important fact that too many poseurs and ethnic arsonists like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton don't want people to know, and what they hide from the general public.  We writers and editors know this as an example of "bias by omission."  Jackson and Sharpton have staked their careers and taken in millions upon millions of donated dollars from people in part by denying those essential facts.

The fact is simple:  No person can honestly agree with Dr. King's words and efforts without acknowledging the tried-and-true commandments of Almighty God, the 12 inerrant Jewish prophets, the Book of Proverbs and King Solomon's wisdom, and all of those truths later repeated, taught, and demonstrated by Jesus the Christ 20 centuries ago.

To say otherwise is more blatant bias by omission - which, again, is wrong and sinful.

May we always remember the Source from which Dr. King rightly and correctly made his case.

And in so doing, I hope this helps you *and* me draw closer to God's words, both in the Torah & Tanakh / Old Testament, as well as the four Holy Gospels in the New Testament.
